KINGS POINT COMPUTER CLUB MEETING MINUTES NOVEMBER 1st, 2011
CLICK HERE TO SEND THIS PAGE TO A FRIEND
Our meeting began at 20 minutes of 12
due to problems with the Internet signal being very weak. Jerry Frank, Club
President, set up all the equipment. We needed to call for the Vesta
Computer Tech who was helpful in boosting the signal for us. Unfortunately a
“router” was fried during a power surge.
We heard Pamela Tabak, Computer Tutor, who was in Toronto, CANADA present
our topic, “Senior Scams” through our Internet connection in real time. She
emphasised that many scammers pose as relatives who say “Don’t call my
parents; just send the funds.” Pamela advised us to tell the caller that you
will call them back and then call the parents of your relative to ask if all
is well. In most cases you will be told that
the relative in question is at home safe and sound.
Pamela explained that seniors are easy targets because they are trusting and
concerned about their family and have a "nest egg" to fall back on should
relatives need help. The scammers take advantage of of this knowing that
most seniors will believe their story.
Pamela also warned about email scams which look as though they come from
your bank, credit card company, PayPal, eBay or financial institution which
ask you to “VERIFY” your login name, password, social security number or
account number. NEVER reveal this information or click on any link in an
email that requests this
information. If any of the above institutions need this information they
will ask you to go to your online account and edit there if necessary.
Pamela explained that if you do click on any of these links you will be
compromising your security and it could shut down your computer. A
comprehensive tutorial is posted and can be printed from the HOT TIPS page on the
NOVEMBER
link to remind you of the safeguards that you should follow to keep your
identity safe.
Pamela
offered her FREE online service to our members to help them identify these
problems. Just go to the following link to ask your question and Pamela's
answer will follow within 24hours:

NOTICE:
Our Computer Club is in jeopardy of closing down!
For the past
15 years we have held meetings with at least 100 members present. Last year
our attendance was much lower than usual and unfortunately, this year it is
even lower. If more members do not join this year, we will be forced to
close our club which is so essential to keep our seniors in touch with the
technology age and to make their computing experience easier. It also brings
together neighbors who share a common interest.
The programs we present take a great deal of work and preparation to make sure that all
aspects are covered in a way that can easily be understood by the members.
The preparation and planning of meetings is a "Labor of Love" for Jerry who
enjoys providing his knowledge about the ever changing world of computer
knowledge.
If you have topics that you
would like us to present in future meetings please send an email to
Jerry at:

The National Computer Club Cruise from 1/23 – 1/27/2012 still has room for
computer club members and
computer users/lovers. This cruise is very low cost. Probabilities for
people of every ability of computer
use and interest are expected to attend and speakers are expected. When we have
a positive number of attendees we
will have a bus to the ship. Send your checks ($60.00 for 2 people) for the
bus to and from Miami to Jerry
Frank, 167 Valencia G, Delray Beach, FL 33446
I will let you know the price for the cruise upon request if you call
637-9807.
Les Hallock, V.P., has learned how to take information, and impart it using
PowerPoint.
Dave Waterman, Computer Maven, has been very helpful in repairing, informing
and entertaining.
I look forward to seeing you on December 6th for our next meeting.
Regards, Jerry
Respectfully submitted by
Phyllis Frank, Secretary
