KINGS POINT COMPUTER CLUB MEETING MINUTES APRIL 3rd 2012

Jerry Frank, President of the Club,
began the meeting at 11:35 am. There was a small delay connecting with
Pamela Tabak, Webmaster to K.P.C.C. in Canada so he began by explaining
how to open Windows 8; the newest and most pictorial issue of a Windows
Operating System. Jerry downloaded this “Beta” version which is said to
be officially launched in October of this year. Until it is formally
released Microsoft asks those who are testing it, to send feedback to
Microsoft so that they can improve the final version. After Microsoft
launches Windows 8, updates will follow on a regular basis just as they
have done with previous versions of Windows.
Windows 8 requires you to use your existing software and Jerry states
that most programs that run with Vista and Windows 7 will run with
Windows 8. Unfortunately, if you are still using Windows XP you will
have to get a clean version of Windows 8 and try to install your XP
programs one by one. You may have difficulty using Windows 8 on an XP
machine because the hardware may not be able to handle the requirements
that it needs to run Windows 8. When Windows discontinues “up-dates”
that means the system will remain as is and it becomes obsolete!
We
connected to Pamela’s computer in Toronto, Canada via the internet and
we streamed the images from her computer through our digital projector
so that members could experience the wonders of the new and exciting
Windows 8 operating system. The new desktop, now called “Metro” looks
much like the Apple iPad and works in a very similar way using “APPS”
which we used to call “ICONS.” If you purchased a “touch screen” you
could use Windows 8 just like a “tablet.” If you can work with an Apple
iPad or iPhone you will find Windows 8 very easy to get around. Soon
Windows 8 will be available on “tablets” as well so it will be come very
familiar to all.
Pamela explained that this operating system is easier to navigate than
previous versions of Windows because of its simplistic style and
pictorial façade. Just one click on a program APP and the program opens
in a snap! By using the Windows Key for most tasks you will find your
way around very easily. To assist you with this, open and print the nine
page illustrated tutorial that Pamela prepared for us and follow the
easy to understand instructions while operating Windows 8.
You can find this and other helpful tutorials by clicking on the

button on the KPCC Website:

Both Jerry and Pamela ask that you have patience and use Windows 8 along
with the tutorial. “We understand your hesitancy. Don’t become
frustrated; keep on trying and you will be surprised how you will
eventually succeed.”
Pamela states that she will answer questions by email on all subjects
both hardware and software within 24 hrs if not at once.
Best wishes to all for the Holidays and the summer months. To those who
are leaving, go in good health and come back ready to learn more at the
KPCC. We will be waiting!
Keep on trucking. We are teaching but we are also still learning more
each day so that we can assist our members with the latest and greatest
technology.
Regards, Jerry, President
Respectfully submitted, Phyllis Frank, Secretary
